To their good fortune, no one was injured in the incident and the family has suspected that the bullet may have been fired as part of a joint Indo-Brazil-South Africa naval exercise off the Vasco coast.
According to Vasco Police, Milton D’Souza accompanied by his family, Jose Philip D’Souza, Fiola Rego and Arnold Rego filed a complaint on Tuesday evening stating that the family members were woken up by a loud sound at about 6.45 am.
“While my mother was sweeping the house in the evening, she found a bullet in one corner. We then realised that the sound early in the morning had been that of the bullet piercing through the roof and entering the house,” stated the complainant.
Police said they have received the complaint and are investigating the case.
According to Joaozinho D’Souza, the impact was such that the bullet pierced through the asbestos sheets of the roof and passed through the false ceiling, before creating a hole in the wall.
D’Souza also said that the bullet also damaged the roof of his neighbour.
He has suspected that the bullet may have been fired as part of the joint Indo-Brazil-South Africa naval exercise presently going on at sea.
“My strong suspicion is that the trajectory of the bullet indicates that it has come from the sea, since a naval exercise is going on in the same area. However, it is up to the police to investigate it,” D’Souza told The Goan.
“It is very dangerous that live ammunition has entered a residential area and the authorities concerned should be more careful in future while conducting such exercises and should avoid conducting it in close vicinity of residential areas,” added D’Souza.
When contacted, a naval official refuted the speculations of D\\\\\\\'Souza.
“There has been no activity in that area during the entire exercise. Hence, there is no link whatsoever between the bullet and the joint naval operations,” the naval official said.
Incidentally, besides the navy, three other security agencies “ CISF, Marine police and Coast guard “ also operate in the area.
