Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said biodiversity gardens are being developed in different parts of the constituency, considering the importance of biodiversity in the lives of human beings.
He was speaking at Porvorim after inaugurating the office of the biodiversity garden in the presence of member secretary of Goa Biodiversity Board Dr Pradeep Sarmokadam, Penha de Franca Sarpanch Swapnil Chodanckar, Socorro Sarpanch Soniya Pednekar, ZP Member Kavita Naik, Secretary of Penha de Franca Biodiversity Management Committee Ganpat Siddaye and panch members.
“A similar biodiversity garden will also be developed at Socorro. On account of biodiversity spots, several migratory birds and butterfly have started visiting Porvorim now. The biodiversity garden came into existence because we received good support from the Penha de Franca panchayat,” said Khaunte.
Dr Sarmmokadam mentioned that there are 205 Biodiversity Management Committees in Goa, of which 191 are in panchayats and the remaining are in municipalities.
“The Penha de Franca Panchayat Biodiversity Management Committee is very active and they have not only developed the biodiversity garden but also opened an office to look after its maintenance,” said Dr Sarmokadam.
Secretary of Penha de Franca Biodiversity Management Committee Ganpat Siddaye said the committee plans to tag important trees in Porvorim for the benefit of residents.
