Traffic officials inspect accident-prone zone in Pernem

The DySP Traffic (North) and Pernem Traffic Cell police inspector on Thursday inspected the site of the fatal road mishap near Torse High School on the NH66 on September 27, which claimed the lives of a mother and her toddler.

A statement released by SP (Traffic) SM Pradhudessai stated that the DySP Traffic (North) and Pernem Traffic Cell police inspector noticed that the construction of new NH66 near the government primary school is in progress.

At Torse, the construction of the new NH66 was found to be temporarily on hold and a traffic cautionary sign of ‘Take Diversion’ was placed for the traffic coming from Patradevi to Pernem.

It was noticed in the inspection that the stretch of NH66 from Patradevi to Torse up to the government primary school is a cemented road having divided two-lane carriage way without potholes, with the divided two-lane carriage way ending just before the government primary school.

The officials also observed that there is a ‘Take Diversion’ signboard placed at the end of the divided two-lane carriage way. Thereafter further the said road becomes two lane carriage way without central divider and the same is a tarred road without potholes.

However, at the merger point where the ‘Take Diversion’ signboard is placed, the road is slightly uneven with a small pothole.

The police team found that there is a small stretch of road behind the said ‘Take Diversion’ signboard which is under construction and the same in non-motorable with mud dumped on it. After the accident, the mud has been replaced with loose metal aggregate, SP Prabhudessai added.
