Uncertainty still prevails over the candidature of Mayem MLA Anant Shet and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar for the upcoming State Legislative Assembly elections, with the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not being able to come to a consensus with the party workers in these two constituencies.
The party has, however, shortlisted candidates in three constituencies - Prakash Velip in Quepem, Vishwajit Krishnarao Rane in Poriem and Ramrao Wagh in St Andre.
The members of BJP’s core committee held meetings with Mayemcars and Canaconacars over the candidature of their current MLAs. Sources informed that in both cases, most of the members were in favour of candidature to Shet and Tawadkar. The constituents have been told that the candidates would be announced in the next two days and there will be no additional meeting held with the members.
With regard to Mayem constituency, the party was not able to zero down Shet’s candidature despite a three-hour long meeting. The members were called for a meeting with the committee individually and questioned on whether they would be with the party or Shet for the upcoming elections. Similar was the case with Canacona constituency, with members being asked whether they would be with the party or with Tawadkar.
In Mayem, the BJP is contemplating on replacing Shet with former Congress candidate Pravin Zantye, and Tawadkar with former Canacona BJP MLA Vijay Pai Khot.
Party leaders also held a meeting with members of Sanvordem constituency. There too, two names have come up for BJP’s candidature “ MLA Ganesh Gaonkar and Party’s State President Vinay Tendulkar.
