Verem-Vaghurme Sarpanch Adv Satyavan Palkar and Deputy Sarpanch Swati Palkar, the husband-wife duo, were on Thursday voted out of office in a no-confidence motion moved against them by four panchas.
A senior politician from the area told The Goan that in the last 53 years, this is the first instance where both the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch were unseated together.
Vaishali Naik, Vinay Naik, Gurudas Naik and Shrikant Shet Verenkar had moved the no-confidence motion against the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch.
Interestingly, Adv Palkar was elected as sarpanch on December 21, and a day later, on December 23, a no-confidence motion was moved against him and his wife.
“I got a chance to work in the office for only one day. But they have mentioned unwanted reasons in the no-confidence motion notice. They said I do not take them into confidence and I am a dictator. Aren’t the reasons ridiculous,” Adv Palkar told The Goan.
According to Adv Palkar, when he hadn’t started any panchayat business, how can the four panchas level allegations against him. “I have given my written submission to the Director of Panchayat to consider this no-confidence motion as null and void as allegations are baseless,” he said.
Swati was elected as deputy sarpanch a couple of months ago.
Returning officer from BDO Swapnil Nageshkar was present to conduct the election process, while panchayat secretary Divya Surlekar assisted him.
