The Congress labeled the BJP-led government as “anti-people” and “intellectually bankrupt” for ignoring the common man’s demands and trying to force decisions down the people’s throats.
“This government has no interest in taking up the cause of Goans. It’s an anti-people government which fans only its own concerns,” said Yatish Naik, General Secretary and spokesman of Congress, while addressing a news conference organized by the Saligao Block Congress Committee at Sangolda on Friday.
Former MLA and Congress general secretary, Agnel Fernandes was also present.
The Saligao Congress Block condemned and opposed government’s plan to widen the CHOGM road by demolishing heritage homes.
“We have learnt that the government has plans to bring down some age-old heritage homes to widen the CHOGM road. Instead of protecting heritage homes, this government is doing just the opposite,” said Naik, while vowing to come on streets if the government tried to steam roll against people’s wishes.
Naik urged the government to take the public into confidence whenever it plans to take crucial decisions.
“There’s no need to widen the CHOGM road. The government can try and find an alternative bypass road to resolve the problem,” he said.
The Congress general secretary also called for developing of sports infrastructure in Saligao.
“Build state-of-art grounds and provide trainers to coach talented youth in the constituency,” Naik demanded.
The Saligao Congress Block has written to the directors of Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Sports Authority of Goa, requesting playgrounds to the villages of Saligao, Pilerne-Marra, Nerul and Reis Magos. It also asked for quality sports facilities, equipment and trainers to all villages in the constituency.
The Saligao Block has also submitted a memorandum to the chief secretary bringing to his attention the hardship and inconvenience faced by the people due to bad and erratic supply of electricity and water.
The memorandum highlighted the hike in power and water tariff and requested roll back of the charges and also to ensure guaranteed and continuous supply of power and water.

Former MLA and Congress general secretary, Agnel Fernandes censured the government for getting all its priorities wrong.
“After reclassifying the coconut tree to the status of grass, the government now plans to declare the peacock and the bison as vermins. Has this government gone nuts? How can they even think of declaring the national bird and the state animal as vermins,” Fernandes wondered aloud at the news conference on Friday.
“If the government goes ahead with the decision, then it would be the most stupid decision that any government could ever take.”
“Today it’s the birds and animals. I can’t tell what is in store for tomorrow. This government appears to have really lost it,” the former MLA said.
Agriculture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar was quoted in a section of the media that his department was assessing if peacock and bison could be declared as vermin.
