Boat festival to kick off Siolim revelry

Siolim will come alive on Friday evening, with the traditional boat festival kicking off the Sao Joao revelry turning the village into a carnival mood.

Having been celebrated for the last 26 years, the Sao Joao festival in Siolim has gained wide popularity and people from all over the State converge at the spot near the St Anthony s Church in Siolim. There is a grand traditional boat parade organised in the vicinity of Siolim Church where people come dressed in uniform and parade on a decorated float. Besides wearing colourful clothes, locals wear the traditional kopel or crown on their head. The headgear is tastefully stitched together with leaves, flowers and fresh fruits. Apart from the boat parade, contests and sing-song sessions keep the festivity alive throughout late evening. “At least 12 gold coins are up for grabs for the various contests organised during the festival,” said Sylvester Fernandes, Sarpanch of Siolim-Marna Panchayat and the president of Siolim Jao Joao Traditional and Boat Festival and Cultural organization. “Besides the traditional folk dances, we have invited various artistes to perform on stage. A band will be in attendance too to regale the crowd,” Fernandes said. He said as usual there will be a prize for best kopel for children and the adults and various other spot prizes. “Calangute MLA Michael Lobo will be the chief guest, while Siolim Parish Priest Fr Raul Colaco will be the guest of honour at the event,” Fernandes informed.
