The Cutbona Boat Owners Federation has flagged the navigation hazards at the mouth of River Sal allegedly caused by ONGC illumination at Betul.
Raising concerns over the navigational difficulties faced by fishing vessels at the Betul river mouth, the Federation alleged that excessive illumination from the ONGC ATI Betul facility is creating serious safety hazards, particularly during night-time operations.
In a letter addressed to ONGC authorities, the Federation said the lighting in and around the ATI Betul area is adversely affecting visibility for fishermen entering the river channel and heading out to sea.
“It has been observed that the illumination in and around the ONGC ATI Betul area is causing significant visibility issues for our fishing boat owners, particularly while entering the river channel and proceeding towards the open sea. The excessive and misdirected lighting creates glare and confusion, making it difficult to clearly identify the channel and natural navigation markers,” Federation President Mahendra Juvatkar and Secretary Patrick Silva stated in the letter.
Speaking to the media, Silva said the situation poses a serious threat to the safety of both fishermen and their vessels, especially during adverse weather conditions and low-tide movements.
“Several boat operators have reported near-miss incidents due to reduced visibility and disorientation caused by the current lighting conditions. Many trawlers have also run aground, resulting in substantial losses for members of the fishing community,” he said.
The Federation has urged ONGC to take immediate corrective measures to address the issue. It has suggested that the illumination be regulated, shielded, or redirected to prevent interference with marine navigation.
The Federation has also recommended that ONGC coordinate with the Fisheries Department and local fishing bodies to develop measures that ensure the safe and smooth movement of fishing vessels through the river channel.
Expressing hope for an early resolution, Silva said the Federation looks forward to ONGC’s prompt intervention in the interest of the safety and welfare of the fishing community.
