Boat owners now throw ‘light’ on generator sets

While LED lights are on the way out from most of the fishing vessels following the government’s ban, questions are raised around jetties whether vessels are also required to remove generator sets onboard.

As rival boat owners have come face to face over the removal of gen sets from fishing vessels, the Directorate of Fisheries has turned to the Captain of Ports seeking technical opinion whether vessels really require the generators while fishing other than to power LED lights.   
While the small boat owners and traditional fishermen have insisted that the Fisheries Department remove the generators from the vessels along with LED lights, purse seine owners have contended that while they have no objection to remove LED lights as per government’s ban, they maintained that gen sets are required to power refrigeration facilities and water pumps on vessels. 
Says Cutbona Boat owners Union President, Savio D’Silva: “LED lights are powered by the generators. Hence, gen sets should have no place onboard vessels. What is the guarantee that generators will be not be used to power lights clandestinely”.

Naik to probe lathi charge on fishermen

The government, in an order issued on Monday appointed South Goa Collector Swapnil Naik to conduct a magisterial inquiry into the incident of lathi charge against the protesting fishermen on May 12.
