Ward 16 Councillor Girish Borker, known to be the right-hand man of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, was on Thursday unopposed as the new chairperson of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).
While the official election for the new chairperson is scheduled on Friday morning with Mormugao Dy Collector Bhagwant Karmali as the presiding officer, Thursday was the last day to file nominations for the post of the chairperson.
While Borker filed his nomination before the MMC Chief Officer Jayant Tari on Thursday morning, no other councillor turned up to file a nomination, paving the way for Borker to be elected unopposed to the vacant post.
While Girish Borker was elected unopposed, he will formally be appointed as the new Chairperson of the BJP-led council after the formal elections are held on Friday morning.
A lot of councillors were present as Borker filed his nomination for the post of Chairperson and supporters gathered outside the MMC building waiting for the announcement.
It may be recalled that Councillor Leo Rodrigues had resigned from the chairperson’s post on July 3 after his mutually decided tenure of one-year ended.
Later speaking to reporters, Borker thanked the BJP party and fellow councillors for having given him the opportunity to serve as the chairperson of MMC.
“I assure to keep the council united and take up works across all 25 wards. I also want to resolve the garbage menace on top priority,” said Borker.
