Breast cancer: Women to be screened via Anganwadis

The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has been designated the nodal agency for an ambitious mass screening programme for the early detection of breast cancer in the State.

Initially, the staff including doctors and nurses from GMC, the Directorate of Health Services besides the staff of the Directorate of Women and Child Development will be screened, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said, adding that a comprehensive screening programme at the grass-root level through Anganwadis will also be held.

On Friday, Rane held a meeting with the CEO of UE LifeSciences Gauri Godse at which GMC Dean, Shivanand Bandekar, DHS Director Dr Geeta Kakodkar, Consultant Oncologist Dr Anupama Borkar and other health ministry officials reviewed the iBreast initiative.

Rane said a special programme for the staff to raise awareness about breast cancer.

"We shall be conducting screenings at the grassroots level through Anganwadi workers and ANMs in our attempt towards early detection of #breastcancer," Rane tweeted and added that GMC will serve as the nodal agency, allowing us to screen our staff from the directorate of women and child development, staff at GMC and DHS nurses.

UE LifeSciences is the promoter of iBreastExam (iBE) technology which uses mHealth point-of-care solutions for breast cancer detection.
