Burglars struck Paroda VKSS Society at Gudi-Paroda, Quepem on Tuesday night and decamped with gold ornaments and other valuables from 16 lockers. The stolen booty may run into crores of rupees.
Speaking to The Goan, DySP Quepem Sammy Tavares said the VKSS Society manager, Jasmine Cardozo complained that the burglary may have taken place between 5.30 pm on Tuesday and 9.30 am on Wednesday. The burglars broke open the window grills of the manager’s cabin and entered the Society premises.
“The burglars removed the grills of the locker room and 16 safe deposit lockers were found broke open,” informed DySP Tavares.
The police pressed the dog squad into service, while the finger print experts also rushed to the site.
DySP Tavares further informed that the VKSS Society didn’t employ security guard and the Society doesn’t have CCTV cameras installed in its vicinity. The work of installing CCTV cameras was ongoing since Tuesday.
When contacted, Quepem Police informed that out of the 18 safe deposit lockers at the Society, 16 lockers were found broke open by the burglars.
Police further informed that the Society manager Cardozo filed a complaint stating that the burglars cut the grills of her cabin and entered the premises.
The police added that the value of the stolen booty is not known.
The police further said that the safe deposit lockers belonging to Isabel Carvalho, Anant Verlekar, Jyoti Veer, Luis Fernandes, Ranjana Naik, Bindiya Volvoikar, G Fernandes, Nicolas Silveira, Usha Joshi, B Sanandhi, Ashok Naik, Umesh Bhandari, Sanjita Kota, Catherine Carvalho and Nevia Cardozo were found broke open and the valuables missing.
Speaking to reporters, Society secretary Inacio Theresa said the Society was in service for the last 16 years and has been offering locker facilities for the last 7-8 years.
Society Manager Jasmine Cardozo said: “There is no security guard employed at the Society. We had taken the decision to install CCTVs some days back and the work of installing CCTV cameras was going on since last two days.”
Quepem PSI Vishnu Dessai is investigating the case.
