“I don’t want to commit political suicide by quitting Congress. I am happy as an MLA and am enjoying life…,” Halarnkar told The Goan.
He said offers to join the BJP were always there even during the previous assembly elections but he never gave it a serious thought.
“At several point of time, I have had people from the BJP calling me up and approaching me but I ignored them. I have made it very clear I will not join the BJP,” the Congress MLA said when asked whether any senior BJP leaders had approached him.
Soon after Vishwajeet Rane quit Congress, speculations were rife that the Tivim
MLA was one of the many Congress legislators under the BJP radar.
Halarnkar said no one could lure him with any offers as he was well-settled in
life and had everything a person needs.
“If my family’s wants are high…if we want some good bungalows and some other amenities…then one could fall to temptations. If I have no wants…finally the conscience speaks…,” he said pointing to the white khadi shirt he was wearing which according to him was stitched in 2007 when he became a minister.
Halarnkar further said he would never be able to come to terms with the BJP ideology which was firmly entrenched with the RSS philosophy.
“I don’t think I will be able to survive in BJP. I am a diehard Congressman and will remain so till the end,” Halarnkar signed off.
