Close on the heels of public anger over attempts to change Vasco town into 'Sambhaji', another controversy over names of places is brewing up in Curchorem.
There is a growing demand to insist on using “Curchorem” in all matters pertaining to Curchorem town, instead of the existing practice of using “Sanvordem” in references to Curchorem town.
The Curchorem Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) has, in fact, unanimously resolved to ask Quepem RTO office to insist that buses plying from the Curchorem bus stand should use “Curchorem” on its name board and not “Sanvordem”.
At the first council meeting convened recently, the councillors strongly supported the resolution and opined that Curchorem should be known by its own name and not by the name of the neighbouring village.
It was resolved to write to the RTO office Quepem demanding to permit the buses plying from Curchorem bus stand to use Curchorem and not Sanvordem.
Speaking to The Goan, Councillor Felix Fernandes, who is also the president of Curchorem Sanguem Margao Route Bus Owners' Association, said people of Goa and other places should know the clear difference between Curchorem and Sanvordem.
“These are two distinct places in different constituencies and have separate entities. Curchorem is a town and governed by municipal council and Sanvordem is a village across river, which is in Sanvordem constituency. We have taken a resolution and have forwarded it to the Assistant Director of Transport Quepem for necessary action,” said Fernandes.
“If the government and people want to keep the name Sanvordem on their buses, then let the government build a bus stand in Sanvordem village and use buses with the “Sanvordem” name board,” he added.
“The idea of asserting Curchorem came up because we have to be proud of our town. If we see ground reality, Sanvordem village has been lagging behind Curchorem town in terms of development and infrastructure are concerned.”
“The main bazaar and big market are located in Curchorem town. Buses from all major bus stands from Sanguem, Quepem, Margao, Ponda come to Curchorem bus stand and not Sanvordem. Hence, we took this resolution so that credit of all good development and infrastructure should come back to Curchorem and people of Curchorem,” said Fernandes.
“I feel that the transport officials should take this issue seriously and stop giving permits to buses using the name “Sanvordem”, inspite of Curchorem,” he opined.
When contacted, Assistant Director of Transport (Quepem) Rajesh Naik admitted that the people get confused with the name of Sanvordem and Curchorem. “To be frank, being new to this area I was also unaware regarding the issue.”
“After Goa's liberation, there was only one transport office at Panaji and after few years, a new office was set up at Margao. The permit records were also transferred and this practice of giving permits as Sanvordem remained as it is in Quepem too,” Naik added.
When asked what can be done, Naik said if CCMC feels that permits to buses from Curchorem should not be given on the name of Sanvordem, then the council should send a memorandum to the Director of Transport Department at Panaji and the transport minister demanding quick action.
CCMC Chairperson Vishwas Sawant, also agreed to the demand made by Felix Fernandes, and said during colonial time, people used the name of Sanvordem.
“But at present, Sanvordem is a village which is 2 kms away from Curchorem town. Major infrastructure and commercial activities take place in Curchorem and people must acknowledge the name of Curchorem town,” he added.
