By 2019, we want to reduce road deaths by 50%: CM

panaji
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that Goa should aim at reducing deaths on roads by 50 per cent by the year 2019.
"We have to ensure zero deaths on Goan roads. Government is in the process of tying up with an NGO to work towards this goal. By 2019, we want to reduce road deaths by 50 per cent and then reduce it further every year through various mechanisms," Parrikar stated.
The CM was speaking at an award distribution ceremony hosted at the Goa Police Headquarters in Panaji to felicitate and applaud the efforts of 23 top traffic sentinels.
Goa Police introduced the "Traffic Sentinel" scheme in November this year under the umbrella of community policing. The scheme requires voluntary registration by citizens as traffic sentinels with Goa Police Whatsapp number 7875756110. Thereafter, traffic sentinels can report traffic violations with visual evidence.
On Saturday, 23 traffic sentinels who accumulated over 100 points were rewarded with Rs 1,000 for every 100 points, an appreciation certificate and a small token. A total amount of Rs 1,04,000 was disbursed as reward to these 23 traffic sentinels at the hands of CM Parrikar.
Darius Fernandes from Margao emerged as the top traffic sentinel, accumulating 2,800 points and accordingly, he received Rs 28,000 as cash prize for his efforts.
After a quick chat with the traffic sentinels, Parrikar said, "We should all take it as a mission. Money is just an incentive. Soon, we will also begin to send challans via email and online payment of fine amounts will be encouraged."
Director General of Police Dr Muktesh Chander, who envisaged the scheme during his term as Special Commissioner of Delhi Traffic Police, expressed satisfaction at its success in Goa.
"Till date, a total of 1,020 citizens have registered as traffic sentinels and 3,494 notices have been issued for traffic violations based on their inputs. In a way, we now have more than 1,000 mobile CCTV surveillance cameras," DGP Chander said.
Meanwhile, it was informed that in March, the first bumper draw prize for the quarter of the year will be announced for the traffic sentinel. The prize will be a Maruti Suzuki car. Thereafter, the quarterly bumper prize will be a Hero Honda motorcycle.
