Stating that nature is the best friend of human beings, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said preservation of trees is very important.
Khaunte was speaking after planting a sapling at Defence Colony in Porvorim on Environment Day. The programme was organised by Porvorim Rising.
“It is seen that the State government in the name of industrial development allows massive cutting of trees. The government has even changed the definition of coconut tree to facilitate cutting of coconut trees,” stated Khaunte.
“Goa needs sustainable development. They should not permit red category industries in Goa. It is the duty of each and every individual to safeguard environment for healthy living and maintain Goa clean and green,” added Khaunte.
Brigadier (retd) Naves Braganza said tree plantation should be made a mass movement to protect environment from global warming. “Pollution free Goa is possible only with public participation. We must strive to protect environment.”
“In Defence Colony, the residents have planted 123 saplings in an area of 13,700 sq mts. They have also constructed a joggers track and children's park spending Rs 11 lakh,” said Brigadier Branganza.
ZP member Gupesh Naik, Socorro Sarpanch Ditosa Lobo, Salvador-do-Mundo Deputy Sarpanch Reena Fernandes and Panch Safar Phadte also spoke on the occasion. Dr Ashwini Kumar welcomed the gathering and also proposed the vote of thanks.
