Let’s not act as dumb councillors but be firm on decisions: Mapusa councillor
Calls for permanently shifting of inter-state buses to new site
MAPUSA
The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to place the proposal to shift the inter-state buses to a permanent location before the government, but not before a senior councillor lashed out at the council meeting on Wednesday calling the Mapusa councillors dumb for not being able to take a firm decision in the matter.
“Why can’t the inter-state buses be shifted to a permanent place at the new bus-stand area once for all? We cannot sleep on such crucial issues which affects the people of Mapusa. Let’s not act as dumb councillors and take the decision to shift the inter-state buses permanently,” said Ryan Braganza, a senior councillor in Mapusa Municipal Council.
The issue came up when MMC, Chairperson, Sandeep Falari moved a proposal at the ordinary council meeting to temporarily shift the inter-state buses to the new bus-stand area during festive seasons of Chathurthi, Diwali and Christmas.
The parking of the inter-state buses opposite the taxi-stand has been creating massive traffic congestion and chaos in Mapusa particularly in the morning and evenings when the Mumbai buses arrive and leave for their destinations.
Taking cudgels for permanently shifting the buses, Braganza also suggested voting on the issue to find out who was opposing the decision to shift the buses.
“I want to know who is blocking the move which is in the interest of entire public. Since we councillors are not doing our job, the deputy collector and other departments are issuing orders to us. Next, somebody will approach the court and then the courts will direct us to shift the buses. This does not reflect good on us,” he said further.
Treading cautiously on the proposal, MMC Chairperson, Sandeep Falari said he could not unilaterally take a decision to permanently shift the buses as permission of other departments like the RTO will also have to be taken into consideration.
Finally, bowing to the wishes of the council the chairperson agreed to put the proposal before the State government.

MAPUSA: Mapusa Councillor Ryan Braganza's stinging remarks on the issue of parking of inter-state buses opposite the taxi-stand during a Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) meeting had the support of two other councillors, Tushar Tople and Sanjay Mishal.
“I am fully backing Ryan Braganza on the issue. Last time when the Mumbai buses were shifted to the new bus-stand area the congestion was reduced to a huge extent. Even people had appreciated our move,” Mishal said.
Lending his support to the proposal of permanently shifting the Mumbai buses, Tople said it was the need of the hour for the good of everyone in Mapusa.
Councillor Rajsingh Rane was the only dissenting voice, apart from the chairperson, who opposed the idea of permanently shifting the inter-state buses, stating that there was no overhead shed and toilets at the new bus-stand area.
