CANACONA
Coronavirus raised its ugly head yet again recording the highest ever single day spike of 122 active cases, breaching the 100-mark for the second time on Sunday in less than two weeks.
The overall count also crossed the 2000-mark to 2091 in Canacona after the new cases of 122 taking the active tally to 650 in the taluka on Sunday, but down by 238 as compared to 788 three days ago. On the brighter side, there were 76 recoveries taking the overall recoveries to 1,419.
On April 28, 104 active cases of Covid were recorded in Canacona breaching the 100-mark for the first time in the taluka, while day to day cases were on an average increasing by 50 positive cases.
Canacona municipal areas continued to top the list of infected people with 53 cases on Sunday while the numbers in other areas of the taluka were: Agonda (23), Shristhal (18), Poinguinim(12), Gaondongrim (5), Cotigao (4), Cola (4) and Loliem-Polem (3). Meanwhile, people from all walks of life expressed concern over the highest single day increase of Covid cases Sunday, with Goa Forward Spokesperson Prashant Naik describing the situation as going from bad to worse in Canacona.
People also criticised the chaos at the Covid testing centre in Canacona. One of the residents said, "Covid testing centre at Canacona has became a fish market. Covid positive people are moving around freely in the hall which is always packed to capacity."
The resident further said the patients are simply told to leave after after they have been provided with the home isolation kit. Not a single security guard manages the crowd for social distancing.
Social activist Succour Da Silva said, "The medical authorities and elected representives must urgently intervene and must set the SOPs in place without wasting much time. Covid tests and vaccination at one corner and Covid patients ward in other is not not a healthy sign. We hope the authorities will quickly move in action to put things in order at CHC without further delay."
