Canacona labour’s family in panic after receiving bank loan notice

Bank asked Kotres to pay in 7 days or face action

CANACONA
A nationalized bank's loan defaulters notices to the members of a self help group (SHG) to pay Rs 5.25 lakh loan amount within seven days took the wind of a labourer's family at Canacona.
According to sources, Kotres Kanvale, working as a labourer at a wholesale general provision shop at Chaudi and residing behind CHC, was shocked and clueless when a postman delivered a loan defaulters notice to his house on Tuesday evening.
The notice was from a nationalised bank at Chaudi for an loan amount of Rs 5 lakh and asked Kanvale to pay Rs 5.25 lakh inclusive of interest incurred on the loan, within seven days or face further action.
His wife, who got the notice, got it read from neighbourhood and told her husband, after he returned home from work on Tuesday night.
"The whole night not only Kotress, but even his wife could not get sleep, not knowing when and where he had taken so much loan and how he is going to pay such a huge amount within 7 days," said Babu Naik, to whom the Kotres approached early Wednesday morning.
Following Kotre's reluctance to approach the bank, his wife was convinced to approach the bank to find out the details. His wife approached the bank and returned
back after the bank staff reportedly informed her that the notice was served to them by oversight and they need not worry.
"A self help group had obtained loan of Rs 5 lakh on January 5, 2015, and with interest, the total outstanding is Rs 5.25 lakh. The loan recovery notices are issued to all the 15 members of the SHG, including the three signatories," bank manager Chandan Kumar Singh told The Goan.
"Kotres Kanvale is one of the members of this SHG, so he also got the notice. Despite repeated requests, the SHG failed and neglected to pay outstanding loan dues and the interest," he said.
The bank has also warned the self help group members of filing a suit in civil court to recover the loan dues, if they failed to clear the outstanding dues within 7 days.
