Canacona MLA asks Rs 22 cr funds in lieu of cancelled Poinguinim sports project

CANACONA
Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes on Thursday demanded funds to take up a new stadium in Canacona in lieu of the cancellation of Rs 22 crore indoor stadium for the National Games at Poinguinim.

Speaking in the Assembly, Fernandes questioned Sports Minister Babu Ajgaonkar as to why he had cancelled Rs 22 crore sports project (Indoor Stadium for National Games) which had been approved by a former sports minister and a foundation stone was even laid at Poinguinim.

“Don’t underestimate Canacona sportsmen, they have talent. Please take up the project as Canacona also has great potential to developing sportspersons or grant us those funds again so that we can plan a new stadium in Canacona,” said Fernandes.

Fernandes also requested Urban Development Minister Milind Naik to ensure that staff is moved out of the old Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) building and shifted to the adjacent hall, so that construction of the new municipal building can begin immediately.

The deputy speaker thanked the government for giving temporary status to PWD contract workers, but demanded a similar package to contract workers of CMC, forest department and Goa Forest Development Corporation who had been serving for the last 10-15 years.

He also sought better parking facilities at the world-renowned beaches at Palolem and Agonda and requested the tourism minister to explore facilities for parking space, better roads, illumination and toilet blocks.

Fernandes then thanked the fire services for their promptness and efficiency in attending to disasters like the Cyclone Tauktae and for working tirelessly along with electricity staff to restore services in Canacona.

“The Fire Services and electricity staff have done an excellent job during these disasters by clearing roads and obstacles, as well as visiting houses to provide assistance. I also commend the electricity staff from Canacona for restoring services within 24 hours in many parts of Canacona,” said Fernandes.
