CANACONA
While Canacona cries for a decent crematorium, the authorities have reportedly failed to respond to Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes' help to renovate two dilapidated crematoriums in municipal area.
According to Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes, following bitter complaints from various sections of Canacona, it was in the first week of November he initially wrote to the urban minister informing about the plight of the two Hindu crematoriums at Ponsulem and Nagarcem in bad shape.
"During my visits, I found both the crematoriums in bad shape with trees, making the access dangerous and difficult. The sheets are also corroded and the compound walls are damaged. However, there is not even a response from the ministry," Fernandes complained.
"Subsequently, I wrote to Canacona Municipal Council to know if the crematoriums at Ponsulem and Nagarcem are in its possession and if it requires repairs. I also sought to know if CMC needs my help to pursue the matter with higher authorities to facilitate repair/renovation. Surprisingly, there is no response to this request also," Fernandes informed.
Meanwhile, some labourers are seen working at Nagarcem crematorium, cleaning the surroundings around the pyre and also burning the overgrown weeds.
CMC sources informed that the civic body asked the administration to maintain the crematoriums in healthy manner, as the MLA has also raised the issue with members of the public complaining all around.
It may be recalled that residents had been bitterly complaining about the
non-maintenance of the crematoriums not in municipal areas, but also in the entire taluka, and many a times, the stressed family of the deceased is made to run from pillar to post to arrange for firewood.
