A large number of people from different walks of life participated in a candlelit vigil at Salvador do Mundo on Tuesday, in memory of social activist Vilas Mather who was murdered at Torda on October 15.
Addressing a gathering at the venue, Porvorim Congress Block President Shankar Fadte said crimes in Porvorim are on the rise on account of political support and lethargic attitude of Porvorim Police.
“Social activist Vilas Mather was murdered in daylight and at a busy road of Salai and yet police could not immediately arrest the culprit. This indicates that law and order situation has collapsed in Porvorim.”
“The accused were arrested by Maharashtra Police after couple of days, but Porvorim police have still not been able to arrest the mastermind in the crime. People have demanded justice for the family of the deceased and if police makes any attempt to suppress and weaken the case, they will not remain silent,” warned Fadte.
GPCC Spokesperson Trajan D’Mello said the murder of the RTI activist was a serious crime which was well-planned and bigwigs were involved in this case.
“There are chances that police may weaken this case to enable the release of the accused. People should continue their fight till the family of the deceased gets justice,” said D’Mello.
President of North Goa BJP Mahanand Assnodkar and social activists, Wilber Ticlo, Rajan Ghate, Rama Canconkar and Melchor Pinto, also spoke and demanded justice for the murdered social activist.
