Even as Sunday’s relatively dry weather kindled hopes in the hearts of farmers that the receding flood waters from their paddy fields will minimize damage to the standing crop, a team of the Carambolim Comunidade and locals inspected eight sluice gates in its
jurisdiction.
Led by the president of the Carambolim Comunidade Venzy Viegas, the team assessed the damage to the sluice gates owing to last week’s incessant showers which led to the Mandovi river and Cumbharjua canal breaching the banks and flooding the kazhan lands in Tiswadi and further
upstream.
The Carambolim Comunidade will co-ordinate with the locals and ensure maintenance of the bundhs and sluice gates to assist farmers in its jurisdiction, Viegas said.
Meanwhile the Met office said, light to moderate rainfall is expected to occur at most places in North and South Goa during the next
five days.
On Sunday, Valpoi received six centimeters of rainly, Pernem (5 cms), Mapusa and Sanquelim got (4 cms), Mormugao received three centimeters while Panaji and Dabolim got 2 cms of rainfall, the Met report
said.
Fishermen however have been cautioned that strong winds with speeds reaching 45-55 km/hr gusting to 65 km/hr are likely to prevail along and off the Goa-Maharashtra coast for the next two days. They have been advised not to venture into the sea for the next two days.
Also, high waves of 3.5 - 4.0 meters are forecast up to 11.30 pm on Monday along t
he Goa coast from Vengurla to Vasco.
