There was commotion at the Sangolda gram sabha on Sunday with two groups getting into a physical fight over the issue of construction of illegal structures in the village fields.
Resident of Sangolda Sandra Fernandes had been raising this issue of construction of unauthorised structures in the fields of Sangolda repeatedly in the gram sabhas, but the Sarpanch Avinash Naik looked the other way.
On Sunday, when the gram sabha commenced at 10.30 am, the residents who have constructed unauthorised structures in the fields started abusing Sandra and assaulted her relatives.
The sarpanch failed to control the situation on time as a result the two female groups went for each other’s throats. The police were summoned and the two groups were taken to the police station.
Sandra has filed a complaint with the Saligao Police Station stating that the family of Hemalata Naik along with Sonal Naik, Bhamini Naik and others members of the Naik family, started abusing and assaulting her and her sister by pulling their hair and pushing them down.
She said they also slapped her on the face and twisted her hand. Her sister Sultana De Souza too lodged a similar complaint. Based on the video shooting, the police should take legal action against the accused, the complaint stated.
When contacted, Saligao Police Station staff confirmed they have received the complaint and told this reporter to the police inspector S Dessai to seek more details.
However, despite several attempts PI Dessai could not bee contacted till 9.15 pm.
It is learnt through a reliable source that the Naik family are related to a constable working in the Calangute police station.
