Carambolim lake as wetland? A huge thumbs down

OLD GOA
Carambolim locals and farmers have opposed the moves of the Goa State Wetlands Authority to declare the Carambolim Lake as wetland.

The resolution to this effect was approved at the gram sabha, on Sunday, with the villagers opining that the lake area is actually a farm land where farmers used to do cultivation.

The villagers also stated that the zone of influence for the wetland has been marked 300 meters into the residential areas, which will have disastrous affect on those who have properties there.

Speaking to The Goan, sarpanch Uttam Murgaonkar said, “Since many residential areas have been included in the zone of influence, the villagers have demanded that the proposal for declaring Carambolim Lake as wetland should be scrapped.”

Murgaonkar further stated that the villagers have also opposed the draft CZMP as the plan which was prepared by the villagers has not been adhered to.

“We had shown several structures at Dhadear and Panch Manxer, which however do not figure in the draft CZMP,” Murgaonkar pointed out while stating that the public hearing should also be held at the panchayat level and not at Taleigao as there is no transportation from Carambolim to the venue.
