Caranzalem fishermen oppose water sports expansion, demand protection for fishing grounds

Panjim: Caranzalem Ramponkarancho Ekvott, have voiced their demand for the official declaration of Caranzalem Beach as a "fishing beach." The association expressed their objection towards the proliferation of water sports activities in the area.

Citing the traditional significance of fishing in the livelihoods of local fishermen, the association emphasized the need to preserve and protect Caranzalem Beach as a space primarily designated for fishing activities. They argued that the introduction of water sports poses a threat to the delicate ecological balance of the coastal ecosystem and adversely impacts the livelihoods of fishermen.

Members of Caranzalem Ramponkarancho Ekvott highlighted the importance of maintaining access to the beach for fishing purposes, as it directly sustains the livelihoods of numerous families in the community. They underscored the historical and cultural significance of fishing in Caranzalem, emphasizing its integral role in the fabric of local identity and heritage.

Furthermore, the association expressed concerns over the potential environmental degradation caused by the expansion of water sports activities, including pollution, disturbance to marine life, and damage to coral reefs and other coastal ecosystems. They called upon relevant authorities to prioritize the conservation of Caranzalem beach and to refrain from granting permits for water sports ventures that encroach upon traditional fishing grounds.
