Carbon pollution, illegalities discussed at Areal

The Sao Jose de Areal gram sabha on Sunday approved the annual budget estimates for the financial year 2016-17 pegged at around Rs 1.18 crore, with a provision of Rs 10 lakh reserved for the development of the Scheduled Tribe community.
At the gram sabha meeting chaired by Sarpanch Gabriel Oliveira, members demanded that this year’s ST fund should be fully utilised for the purpose of social, cultural and sports activity.
The meeting also deliberated at length on the pollution caused by a local carbon factory. While the sarpanch replied that the Goa State Pollution Control Board has not carried out any inspection since the last three months, members demanded that the panchayat body carry out an inspection and forward report to the district Collector for a public hearing.
Some of the members claimed that large properties are developed into plots without keeping open spaces and without obtaining approval from the TCP, panchayat and other authorities. Members requested the chair to file the complaint to the TCP and the Collector in this respect.
The meeting also resolved to carry out a survey of the comunidade land in the village. Members demanded that the panchayat dispatch a letter to the Comunidade of Curtorim to do the survey of the illegal construction coming up in the comunidade land.
Members demanded collection of sopo tax from all hawkers and vendors and gaddas in the village from April 1, through a contractor. Gram sabha members demanded strict action through health department against the industrial units which have becoming breeding ground for mosquitoes.
