A mobile tower existing in the village since 2002 was the subject of intense discussions at the gram sabha meeting of Orlim Panchayat on Sunday, with gram sabha members demanding the removal of the tower citing health hazard to the residents.
At the gram sabha meeting chaired by Sarpanch Gaudencio Luis, the issue was raised by the motley number of gram sabha members, who demanded that the tower be removed after seeking opinion from the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
Sarpanch Luis told the media after the meeting that the panchayat would immediately write to the GSPCB with a plea to give its opinion whether the tower located in the village poses health hazard to the villagers or not.
Giving a brief history of the tower, the sarpanch informed that the tower was erected in 2002, but the license was never renewed thereafter by the company. “The issue has now come up since the original company is no longer in existence and that a new company has started dealing with the panchayat since December last year,” he said.
Replying to a question, Luis said the panchayat would go by the decision of the gram sabha and would remove the tower after seeking opinion from the Pollution Control Board.
