The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) and the Carmona Village Panchayat have come face to face over the garbage issue.

While the GWMC has recommended to the Director of Panchayats not to release the second installment of the garbage grants to Carmona panchayat on grounds that the local body is not collecting wet waste.

Sarpanch Allwyn Jorge has told the Corporation to issue the necessary letter for compliance of garbage management in the village so that the grants are released.

Speaking to the media, Sarpanch Jorge has refuted the GWMC report, saying the villagers themselves utilize the waste for home composting.

“Villagers use other traditional age-old methods for disposing their wet waste and not a single villager has questioned the panchayat on the collection of wet waste. Our panchayat has been at the forefront in garbage management and GWMC has penalised us for our ideals and various pro-people stands,” he said, adding that the Corporation report is politically motivated. Carmona panchayat is known to be upfront and not aligned to any politicians, he added.

Saying that the village stands tall in garbage management without any violations or any dark spots or littering, the Sarpanch said the local body had made budgetary provision for baling and composting machines, while reiterating that GWMC seems to have been forced to punish the panchayat due to political pressure.

Saying there are no takers to take up garbage work at government rates, Jorge said the village does not have even a single bulk generator. “All residential and commercial units treat their own wet waste at source using traditional methods. The village is discriminated on the development front and even on the issue of garbage grants,” he asserted.
