The Saligao garbage fiasco had its repercussion when the Corporation of the City of Panaji sent back sewerage trucks from the STP plant at Tonca for refusing entry to the capital city’s waste-laden trucks in the Saligao plant.
Justifying CCP’s action, Panaji Mayor Uday Madkaikar said politics on the garbage front in Saligao was affecting the capital city. “We have no other place to treat garbage because the Bainguinim plant is not yet ready and the same will take at least four years to complete,” he stated.
Around four trucks filled with city garbage were sent back from Saligao two days ago. In protest, the CCP has stopped accepting sewerage from Saligao area and around 28 sewerage tankers were
sent back on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Why should the city suffer for the rift Jayesh Salgaonkar and Michael Lobo on the garbage issue? he questioned.
Madkaikar alleged that the earlier MLAs of Panaji and the government took no concrete steps to solve the garbage issue of the city.
Meanwhile, he informed that the CCP is trying to develop a small in-house treatment facility within the city precincts to solve the garbage problem temporarily.
PCF says Saligao MLA party to decision of plant expansion
PANAJI: Pilerne Citizens Forum on Wednesday slammed Saligao MLA and former Minister Jayesh Salgaonkar for opposing the expansion of the Saligao waste treatment plant only after being sacked from the government.
Addressing a press conference in the city on Wednesday, Prakash Bandodkar, president of the forum, along with Jose Rodrigues, Francis D’Mello and Narayan Gawas, questioned why Salgaonkar was quiet on the expansion when he was a minister.
“The cabinet resolution to expand the plant was taken on February 18, 2019, under then CM Manohar Parrikar. Rs 82 crore, 15 lakh were sanctioned for the work. Why did Salgaonkar not open his mouth then?” questioned Bandodkar.
“Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar is saying he knows nothing and that Michael Lobo is doing everything. Wasn’t Jayesh a minister in the cabinet when the decision was taken? He is just misguiding people. Michael and Jayesh are working hand in glove. It’s a question of Rs 82 crore. Jayesh is just upset that Michael will get a big share of that without him,” the president went on to say.
Bandodkar said that all the surrounding villages of Saligao, Pilerne, Marra, Candolim were continuously getting the stench from the plant and that they did not want it expanded.
