Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal assured on Wednesday that justice will be done in the case of the demolition of a church in the Chattarpur area of the national capital even as he said that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) which is controlled by the Central government, took the action.
"I can only assure you that justice will be done and whatever is right will be upheld," Kejriwal said in response to a query posed by a journalist at his Wednesday press conference in the capital.
According to media reports, the south Delhi district administration on July 12 demolished a portion of a church allegedly built upon “encroached” land. Members of the said church are however alleging that the action is “illegal” and no notice was served.
"I was initially told that the demolition was carried out by the Delhi Development Authority. The DDA comes under the Centre. The Delhi government has no control over it,” Kejriwal further said.
"The DDA it seems approached the High Court, which gave the order and the DDA took the action,” Kejriwal said in response to a pointed question and added that the local MLA of AAP is with the church providing help.
“If there was a stay order by the High Court, the demolition of the portion would not have happened. I don’t know the legal part of the matter. When I arrived here yesterday, I was told that such action had been taken,” Kejriwal further said.
Kejriwal has often faced critique from political opponents, the Congress in particular and sections of netizens on social media, of pursuing a soft-Hindutva and barbs often hurled at his party of being a 'B-team' of the ruling BJP.
The Delhi CM and his party, however, vehemently deny the charge.
The minority Catholic community forms a formidable 27% of the Goa electorate and is a crucial entity in any electoral arithmetic, unaffordable for any political party including the ruling BJP to ignore.
