Chandor villagers complain of illegal sand extraction

MARGAO

Villagers of Chandor along with Sarpanch Edward D’Silva rushed to the river on Monday morning after locals complained that illegal sand extraction has been openly taking place in the river.

In fact, a video showing country made motorized boats and the sand extraction material had gone viral on social media on Monday.

The sarpanch informed that he has requested the residents to lodge a complaint, promising to forward it to the police and Mines Department for further action.

The sarpanch pointed out the banks on the Cottombi side of the river have caved in due to indiscriminate sand extraction in the river.

“In the past, the panchayat had complained to the authorities to crack a whip against the illegal activity, but the operation to catch the violators red handed could not succeeded as the violators were tipped off of the raids”, he said.
