Lobo submitted a memorandum to Calangute PI Tushar Vernekar demanding the arrest of the burglars.

It may be recalled that on Saturday, four antique statues were stolen from the Holy Cross Chapel at Naikavaddo, while a Ganesh idol made of silver worth Rs 80,000 was stolen from Siddivinayak Temple at Candolim on the same day.

On Monday, over 50 residents led by MLA Lobo marched to Calangute Police station and condemned the act.

The memorandum stated that there is a huge rush of tourists at Calangute beach and burglars have targeted houses and religious places. “Temples and churches in Calangute are not safe yet. Arrest the burglars immediately and recover the idols and ornaments stolen,” stated the memorandum.

Speaking to reporters, Lobo said the house owners should fill the tenancy forms before renting out their houses, so that police have all details about the tenant. “This is the responsibility of each house owner and people should co-operate with the police,” appealed Lobo.

“Action should be taken against pimps who supply prostitutes. Action should also be taken against those who forcefully make children beg on the streets. Police should start a mission to curb all illegal activities in Calangute,” demanded Lobo.

“There is no rehabilitation centre in the State, to rehabilitate the children who beg on the streets. I will soon discuss this issue with the chief minister,” he said.

ZP member Shawn Martins and a local, Gurudas Shirodkar, requested PI Vernekar to set up a camp in Calangute and get all the beggars to attend the camp, where food will be provided to all the beggars, an initiative of Calangute citizens.

PI Vernekar said the investigation in the burglaries is in progress and various teams have been formed to conduct inquiry.

“Action against beggars and pimps will also be initiated,” PI Vernekar told the delegation led by MLA Lobo.
