CORTALIM
Co-operation Minister Mahadev Naik has said cooperative societies play an important role in the social economic growth of the people.
Naik was speaking after inaugurating the Cortalim Urban Cooperative Credit Society at Cortalim and also a hearse van, while also congratulating Chairman and Cortalim ZP member Anthony Vaz for the initiative taken in this field. Naik further said, “Earlier to avail a loan from a bank, one had to undergo a lot of formalities and the process was tedious. But now with societies availing loans has become much easier and faster.”
He however cautioned that loans have to be sanctioned on merits to ensure recovery so to avoid becoming NPAs.
The minister also thanked Chairman of Quepem Urban Co-operative Society Prakash Velip for helping Vaz in starting a credit society, since it is usually that people in the same trade do not support others for the same.
Naik who praised Vaz for 25 years of public life also assured him all help in availing government schemes if he approaches the government.
In his speech, Anthony Vaz said he has already fulfilled 80% of his manifesto promises which he had released for ZP poll. “Remaining 20 per cent and much more will be achieved if you people continue supporting me,” he said.
Prakash Velip praised Vaz for the initiative in starting the society and for all the work that he has been selflessly rendering to the people.
Earlier, Cortalim Parish Priest Fr Diogo Fernandes congratulated Vaz for his continuous social service in uplifting the people.
Sarpanchas and panchas from Cortalim constituency were present on the occasion.

Alina kept out for inaugural?
CORTALIM
While the occasion may have been inauguration of the credit society and commissioning of the hearse van, many saw it with a political angle especially after local BJP MLA and Minister Alina Saldanha was not invited for the function.
Anthony Vaz who was BJP candidate for 2002 election which saw victory for Matanhy Saldanha for the first time and defeat for Mauvin Godinho who had to bite the dust for the first time, has already announced to take a plunge in 2017 Assembly election.
But what Vaz is not coming clear on is the party he intends to contest from. “I will take a call after consulting my workers,” Vaz had told The Goan a few days ago.
In fact, Vaz was seen as the unofficial candidate of the BJP in 2015 ZP election which saw the defeat of the BJP candidate and late Matanhy Saldanha’s nephew Olencio Simoes. There were also rumours that Vaz had the blessing of senior BJP leaders to contest the ZP poll.
According to BJP workers, it will not come as a surprise if Alina Saldanha has to make way for Vaz in the Assembly election given the fact that Alina lacks support in the party as she would not bend when it came to upholding of law and interest of the State.
