CANACONA
The Weekly Saturday Market at Chaudi-Canacona returned to normalcy a week after tensions escalated over non-Goan Muslim traders doing business at the market.

It was a normal but hectic day for both local and outstation traders, as well as for the weekly shoppers and market-goers who turned up in large numbers at the bazaar on Saturday.

It may be recalled that issues erupted over objections to taking out the ‘Julus’ (procession) for the Muslim community, which led to the closure of the weekly bazaar a week ago after a call was made to stop patronising the outstation Muslim traders bringing their goods for the weekly market.

This resulted in the closure of the entire market last Saturday, as only a handful of traders who arrived in three transport vehicles were able to open their stalls, thanks to the persuasion of some concerned locals, including Chaudi ward councillor Ramakant Naik Gaonkar.

A few more concerned citizens supported Naik Gaonkar’s view that the common people, particularly the working class, labourers, and migrants who make their weekly purchases at the bazaar, should not be made to suffer.

On Saturday, the weekly market was bustling, with many new traders joining the regular ones, according to a source.

Meanwhile, Shri Parashuram Panchaigram Devasthan in Poinguinim decided not to use flowers purchased from markets to decorate the idols of the gods in the Devasthan.

In a social media post that went viral on various platforms, the president of the Shri Parashuram Panchaigram Devasthan Committee, Uday Prabhugaonkar, stated, “From now on, no market flowers will be used to decorate the idols of the gods in Shri Parshuram Panchaigram Devasthan.”

“The flowers grown in the village will be used to make garlands and necklaces using ropes made from banana or wild pineapple, kevan, kumbo, etc. The thread will not be used in the body of the gods.”

Viraj J Pai Khot further stated, “A good decision has been implemented by the Parshuram Panchaigram Devasthan Committee.”
