About 50 vandals from Baina went on a rampage on Saturday afternoon and caused extensive damage at the Chicalim Cottage Hospital, while also threatening staff and patients at the hospital.
The Mormugao police claims to have arrested some persons in this connection.
It incident is believed to have taken place after the miscreants were venting out their anger following the death of a friend.
The miscreants broke the glass of the hospital entrance door, damaged the generator set, destroyed the medicines and tables from the casualty, while the used syringes from the garbage bins were strewn all over the floor of the corridor.
The accused are also reported to have terrorized the patients and threatened the staff over the death of their friend.
Speaking to The Goan, Dr Sujata Kamat said the incident took place at around 1.30 pm, shortly after she had finished attending to the patients.
“I heard a loud noise at the hospital entrance; we could see about 50 youth in their twenties breaking the glass of the door and demanding the presence of a doctor.”
“The youth then came charging towards me and tried to assault me. I got scared and ran for my life and the next moment, I saw some boys armed with stones shouting for an ambulance,” said Dr Kamat.
“They damaged the casualty ward and the medicines, while the used syringes and other waste from the garbage bins were strewn all over the floor of the corridors,” Dr Kamat added.
The miscreants had caused extensive damage to property and medicines, severely hampering services at the hospital.
“The entire hospital is in a mess and we cannot even handle an emergency case as the medicines from the casualty ward and the casualty ward itself has been damaged,” said Dr Kamat.
Dr Kamat informed that the entire incident lasted for about 15-20 minutes, before the youth left the site.
When contacted, Chicalim Cottage Hospital Health Officer Dr Sanjay Dalvi said he had left for his residence at Margao, as on Saturday he works only for half a day.
“When I was at Margao, I received a call informing about the incident and I rushed back to the hospital to take stock of the situation,” said Dr Dalvi.
Dr Dalvi then suspected that the vandalism was linked to the death of a person at the GMC hospital at Bambolim on Friday.
“On Friday evening, some people from Baina had brought Parshuram Harijan (25), who resided near the sewerage treatment plant at Kate-Baina, to the hospital. The patient was suffering from alcoholic jaundice and was in critical condition,” said Dr Dalvi.
“We prepared his case papers and referred him to the GMC for further treatment. But instead of taking him to the GMC, the relatives forcibly took him back home.”
“The same patient was brought back to the Chicalim hospital at around 1.30 am on Saturday and the staff sought to know why Harijan had been brought back to the Chicalim Cottage Hospital. The relatives claimed that they had taken Harijan to a private doctor on Friday evening.”
“Given the serious condition of Harijan, my staff urged the relatives to move the patient to GMC for further treatment. After providing oxygen and an ambulance, Harijan was transferred to GMC,” Dr Dalvi added.
Dr Dalvi informed that Harijan died of his illness at GMC and while the relatives of Harijan were returning back to Baina with his body, they stopped at the Chicalim Cottage Hospital, where some accused damaged the causality ward and the medicines.
When asked if there were CCTVs installed at the Chicalim Cottage Hospital, Dr Dalvi replied in the negative.
While speaking to reporters, Mormugao DySP Mohan Naik said the police had registered the case and had made some arrests.
“We are investigating the matter and all those found guilty for damaging government property, terrorizing the staff and patients will face action,” said DySP Naik.
