MARGAO
Chicken has become dearer and beyond the reach of the common man. Reason: The price of live chicken and broilers has skyrocketed in the last few days.
The price of live chicken at some of the prominent outlets in the commercial capital was pegged around Rs 175 per kilogram. A kilogram of broiler was pegged at an all-time high of Rs 214 in the market on Monday.
Traders attributed the rising prices of chicken, both live and broilers, to the uniform rate in the national market.
Some of the traders have pointed out that the rising prices of feed and less production have all contributed to the skyrocketing of chicken prices in the last few days. “This is perhaps the first time in recent months that the price of live chicken has touched Rs 175 per kilogram”, a trader said.
Sources in the business have ruled out the possibility of the price of chicken coming down in the coming days, saying the price of chicken is almost uniform across the country.
Given the high price of chicken, some of the traders have started selling it at reduced rates, apparently by going for less margin.
