In an unexpected move which has created ripples in the political circles of Chimbel, Deputy Sarpanch Chandrakant Kunkolkar has resigned from the post.
The sudden decision comes as a surprise as Kunkolkar has been directly or indirectly at the helm of the Chimbel Panchayat affairs for over two decades.
When asked about this sudden move, Kunkolkar said he was upset over the poor state of affairs at the panchayat, where development of the village has taken a hit.
Sources within the panchayat have also informed that there was an understanding that another panch owing allegiance to Kunkolkar would get at least six months to occupy the top post before completion of the current term, a promise which other panchas are not willing to keep.
Meanwhile, the resignation of the deputy sarpanch has come at a time when the gram sabha is slated in another week’s time, on May 22, and normally it is the deputy sarpanch who presides over the gram sabha. Since the post of sarpanch has been reserved for women panchas, the female sarpanchas have largely been reluctant to chair the meetings.
With Kunkolkar not in the picture, it remains to be seen who steps up to conduct the gram sabha.
