The Chimbel panchayat held an inspection near the Immaculate Conception Chapel on Thursday, after parishioners complained of activity in a private property near the Chapel.

The parishioners complained that metal sheet structure has been installed in the property without any permission from any authority concerned.

They also complained that the nullah that exists in the property has been blocked and the rain water gets accumulated near the chapel.

St Cruz MLA Rudolf Fernandes, who was present during the inspection, informed The Goan that he received a call that a metal structure has come up near the chapel and the locals raised suspicion that it could be done by the contractor working on the Chimbel flyover.

“However, when I reached the site I came to know that it is a private property and that the nullah located in the property has been blocked due to which water gets logged near the chapel. So, I requested both the parties to sit together and reach an amicable solution,” Fernandes stated.

A parishioner, Conceicao Gomes, informed that there exists a traditional nullah which runs through the private property and which has been blocked.

“Now, rainwater is entering the Chapel. The owner did not come today and the panchayat conducted the panchanama of the structure that has been put up apparently for construction,” Gomes said while demanding that the structure should be demolished and the nullah opened.

Another parishioner, Anthony Lobo, said the private property has been enclosed with the construction of a structure.

“When we questioned the panchayat whether they have granted any permission for the same, they replied in the negative. However, if we want to clear the nullah we cannot do so,” Lobo stated.

He then stated that the water gets logged near the Chapel due to the blockage of the nullah due to which they complained to the panchayat authorities to initiate action.

Eliterio Fernandes pointed out that the enclosing of the property could be done to begin construction.

“But, no permission has been taken for the same,” Fernandes informed and stated that there exists a nullah from the chapel to the rivulet, which passes through the property.

“The nullah cannot be blocked and the panchayat should initiate action in the matter,” he added.

Chimbel Sarpanch Sandesh Shirodkar, panchas Sandesh Chopdekar and Pravin Chopdekar, panchayat secretary Hanumant Borkar, panchayat staff and others were present.
