The Chinchinim gram sabha on Sunday adopted a resolution demanding the withdrawal of the DPR nod issued to Karnataka to divert the Mhadei river waters.
At the gram sabha chaired by sarpanch Valentino Barretto, the meeting called for all-out efforts to stop the diversion of river Mhadei by neighbouring Karnataka.
The gram sabha also deliberated on the ban on plastic bags, with members demanding that the government reign in on the manufacturing of plastic bags below the 70-micron size.
The sarpanch informed that while the government has banned the use of plastic bags below 70-micron size, the availability of plastic bags in violation of the ban has not stopped the circulation in the markets.
He said the ban on plastic bags below 70-micron size will be a success if the government stops all the factories manufacturing plastic bags in violation of the ban in force.
The members demanded to know the antecedents of the person, who was recently arrested by the crime branch with drugs.
The sarpanch complimented panchayat member Frank Viegas, who has been re-elected as the President of the Goan Seamen Association of India. Saying that Chinchinim is the land of the seafarers, sarpanch Valentino appealed to Viegas to take steps to get social welfare schemes for the benefit of the seamen.
