Even as farmers of Assolna on Sunday embarked on a mission to revive fallow fields, neighbouring Sucaldem in Chinchinim has ventured into crab and mussel farming for the benefit of farmers and local youth.
The programme aimed to create awareness among farmers and promote sustainable aquaculture practices. Dr Hrishikesh Pawar, Scientist at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, delivered a session on mussel farming and explained the benefits of integrated farming systems. Chandresh Haldankar, Superintendent of Fisheries, introduced participants to crab farming techniques, with special emphasis on pen culture and crab fattening. He also highlighted the various schemes and assistance available through the Directorate of Fisheries.
On the concluding day, Chandrakant Velip, Deputy Director of Fisheries, encouraged farmers to make use of the department’s schemes and assured them of continued technical guidance and support to take up crab and mussel farming.
Reginaldo Lourenco, MLA of Curtorim, graced the occasion as the chief guest.
He encouraged farmers to diversify into crab and mussel farming as a sustainable source of livelihood and urged the Directorate of Fisheries to organise more such training programmes for the benefit of the farming community.
