The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Tuesday raised concerns over alleged harassment of a protest organiser in Goa, even as it awaited updates on withdrawal of FIRs and release of detained protesters across States in India.
CJP spokesperson and lawyer Ratna Singh said in Delhi that she had taken up the matter of police harassment of a protest organiser in Goa with authorities, urging a probe and appropriate action.
She added that developments were expected soon regarding FIR withdrawals and the release of those held in West Bengal, Delhi and Maharashtra.
In Goa, on Tuesday morning, Old Goa Police telephoned organiser Amreen Sheikh, asking her to report to Panaji Police at 11 am. Her lawyer Malisa Simoes said Sheikh had already been summoned and questioned by Mapusa Police over last Friday’s protest in that town.
Sheikh, however, insisted that police issue a formal call letter or notice if they wanted her to appear, citing legal provisions. She and her associates then reported the matter to the CJP’s Delhi team, pointing to government assurances that all FIRs and complaints against protesting students would be withdrawn.
