Clams (tisreos) have made a comeback at I’ller, which is also known as Vareg Island, off Chicalim.
The arrival of clams has been appreciated by biodiversity lovers of Chicalim who had been concerned about the breeding of clams in the water body.
Since the clams were small in size, locals did not venture into the river to collect them. However, many non-locals have begun scouring the riverbed and extracting the small clams.
This has prompted appeals by locals to local authorities and the Goa State Biodiversity Board to take quick and decisive action to preserve this biodiversity hotspot.
