Margao to celebrate ‘Intruz’ traditionally

The three-day carnival festivities in the Commercial capital will kick-start on February 25 and culminate with the Carnival parade on February 27, as the Margao Carnival Committee has decided to celebrate Carnival “Intruz” in a traditional way.

World famous rhythmic genius Bondo will be an added attraction at the three-day festivities as he is scheduled to conduct workshops of budding talents at the Margao Municipal square on February 26.

Zomnivello khell tiatr concept of yesteryears will be revived this year in a big way as the Committee headed by Margao Municipal Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes as its Chairperson has planned to stage the khell tiatr in all the 25 Municipal wards.

“More emphasis will be given on traditional categories, the added attraction this year will be Bondo who is a world famous, rhythmic genius. He is one of the finest musicians and percussionist who performed over the world and several jazz yatras in Mumbai and also played for several Bollywood music such as the heartthrob song “Papa kehte hai” from the movie Qayamat se Qayamat Tak”, Agnelo told the media.

He added: “The theme of this year’s carnival is “Goenchi Lok Parampara”. The glorious tradition of our State will be showcased during this three-day event.”

Day 1 of the Carnival festivities on February 25 will comprise of various competition. A live band, Brothers in Arms, will be in attendance.

The Chief Officer said that Day 2 programme will consist of live music sessions by Bondo for upcoming and budding musicians (workshop). A live bank will be in attendance with DJ.

The three-day festivities will culminate on February 27 with a parade which includes floats from various villages, cities, commercial entities and cultural troupes along with participation of dancing troupes, revellers wearing masks, costumes; live music groups, etc.

The Carnival of Margao will also try to promote ‘Goenchi Matyechi Kala’, he added.

A screening committee consisting of various government officials will screen the floats so as to not violate conditions of model code of conduct.

On account of Covid and to curb the spread of the disease strict SOPs will be followed.

Senior citizens, patients with comorbidity, children below 10 years of age and pregnant women are advised to stay at home and will not be allowed at parade venue, but can watch it on telecast.

To ensure thermal screening of participants physical distancing and sanitisation of floats, seating area as well as at entry and exit points will be followed. Wearing a mask will be made compulsory for all.

Seating arrangements should be at half of the capacity i.e. 50 % of total capacity.
