However, as per the information obtained from taluka-level ADEIs, the numbers could even go above 25.
Nonetheless, the Directorate of Education (DoE) is exploring the possibility of amalgamating government primary schools which have enrolment below five students.
The talukas of Bardez, Ponda, Tiswadi and Dharbandora have three schools each with zero enrolment. Pernem, Quepem and Mormugao have two schools each, while Salcete and Sattari have one school each with zero enrolment.
While nine schools had shut down during the academic year 2014-15, 15 in 2015-16, 19 in in 2016-17 and the number could be 25 or above this academic year.
The trend clearly indicates that though the government has been providing ample of facilities, including the state-of-the-art infrastructure, it has not been able to attract students to government-run schools.
Speaking to ‘The Goan’, officials of the DoE opined that the number of government-run primary schools shutting down is on the rise as parents prefer admitting their children to aided schools.
