Don't be surprised to find more policemen equipped with alcometers to check for drunken driving in the State, as Chief Minister on Friday approved the purchase of alcometers worth Rs 36 lakh for the police department.
Interacting with the BJP party workers in Canacona on Saturday, Parrikar said over 50% of deaths on roads were the due to drunken driving and police had been directed to take more steps to stop drunken driving which leads to accidents and deaths.
"Only yesterday, I approved the purchase of
more policemen will be equipped with alcometers on the roads now," said the chief minister.
"The Government also plans to make bar owners responsible and to inform police if any person in a highly drunken state leaves
their premises after a certain time."
Informing the party workers that the DSS scheme had revealed that 35,000 young and old widows are beneficiaries, Parrikar said: "It is believed that many of their husbands have died in road accidents and alcohol related diseases."
"In 2017, there were 346 road deaths due to drunken driving and last year, there were 320 accident deaths related to alcohol consumption, besides rash and negligent driving."
In order to save lives due to drunken driving, Parrikar said the government has directed police to be more strict to check drunken driving.
"Now, if five people are attending a party, take precaution to ensure that one who drives the car does not consume alcohol. This practice in countries like the US and UK should also be practised here."
"Only this year, you would have noticed that the New Year did not begin with any accident death, unlike previous years.
