PANAJI: The Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) at Bambolim on Tuesday issued a circular stating that any relative of a patient including elected representatives of the people, who wish to know the status of the patient should contact the concerned unit head, and not the resident doctors present in the ward.
The circular was issued in the aftermath of the recent fiasco that took place at the GMC, where a junior resident lady doctor felt harassed after she was allegedly threatened suspension by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, for making Santa Cruz MLA Tony Fernandes wait till she finished attending to an urgent case.
Fernandes, infuriated at being made to wait when he had asked for the health status of a relative-patient, had approached Rane, who told the Dean to bring the junior resident doctor to his office in Miramar - without any official letter. Scared, the doctor had written a letter of apology to Fernandes which was allegedly dictated by the dean.
However, other resident doctors confronted the dean and demanded that he apologise to the lady doctor who had felt harassed. This happened on Monday, and was reported by 'The Goan' on Tuesday, thus exposing the political pressure that resident doctors at the GMC often had to face.
Getting into damage control mode, the hospital immediately issued the circular to all the HoDs at GMC, the Medical Superintendent, the matron, with copies to the Officer on Special Duty to the Health Minister, the additional secretary of health, and the personal secretary of the Health Minister.
The circular also states that in case any person/relative (including elected representatives of the people) visits the Casualty, the Casualty Medical Officer (CMO) or the Public Relations Officer in the Casualty should be consulted.
The circular was issued by the Director of Administration Dattaram Sardessai.
