Will politicians and concerned authorities lend a helping hand to Margao Urban Health Officer Dr Succorro Quadros to restore the plastic sheets on the Urban Health centre building exposed to heavy rains since the last four days?
The façade of the Portuguese-era Margao Urban Health Centre building had collapsed around a fortnight ago after which the exposed portion was covered with plastic sheets to prevent exposure of the building to heavy rains and contain further damage to the heritage building.
It’s now four days since the plastic sheets have been blown away by strong winds, exposing the damaged façade and wall to rains, but the health centre has been finding it difficult to restore the plastic sheets on the building.
Early Sunday morning saw Dr Quadros descending at the Urban health centre building in a bid to rope in a private crane to facilitate covering of the exposed portion of the building with plastic sheets.
When The Goan called up Fire Officer Gill D’Sa to find out whether the crane of the fire services is available to execute the job of placing the plastic sheets on the building, he said the crane is in the process of being taken to Porvorim for repairs.
Dr Quadros was frantically trying to find out from private crane operators whether the job could be executed by them with the city hit by incessant rains. Till Sunday evening, however, the damaged portion of the building lay exposed to rains, rendering the process of covering the building with plastic sheets defeated.
Local politicians including Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and his Fatorda counterpart Vijai Sardesai, besides health and PWD officials had come rushing to the Margao Urban Health centre when the façade had come crashing down around a fortnight ago.
