The popular dhirios have now come under the scanner of the Govansh Raksha Abhiyan. With reports of illegal bullfights taking place right under the nose of the men-in-uniform in South Goa, the Govansh Raksha Abhiyan has knocked the doors of the South Goa district Collector with a plea to rein in on the dhirios in the district.
The organisation have also demanded that the district Collector stop the illegal slaughter of cattle in South Goa.
Led by GRA President Hanumant C Parab, the delegation submitted a memorandum to the Collector on Thursday with a plea to stop the illegal bullfights and illegal slaughter of animals. The GRA has received the support of Shree Parashuram Gomantak Sena, which has demanded an immediate stop to the bull fights and slaughter of cattle in the State.
Citing a reported case of a bull sustaining serious injuries in a bullfight, the memorandum stated that the bullfights are arranged for money, with lot of batting taking place on the winning bulls in various parts of South Goa. The memorandum made a mention of the Colva-Benaulim belt playing host to the bullfights, accusing the men-in-uniform for failing to stop cruelty to the animals, which results in the death of live cattle due to police negligence. “Animal lovers and Gaupremi has lost faith in police officers, who failed in implementing the High Court order in the State of Goa,” the memorandum said.
The organisation also charged the Goa Police in effecting the seizure of beef importing vehicles, coming from the illegal slaughter houses of Karnataka. It was also alleged that illegal slaughtering of cattle is going on in South Goa, for which action was sought on top priority.
“We demanded action on both issues,” the organisation said, while threatening to take all necessary moves as per law and in a democratic manner to get the High Court order implemented in the State.
Parab later said the district Collector has promised to look into the matter. The delegation was also requested to call on the Superintendent of Police, South on the matter.
