VASCO
The ongoing Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) staff strike has left garbage spilling over on roads in the port town attracting stray dogs and cattle, much to the anger of motorists and residents alike.
Outgoing MMC chairperson Nandadeep Raut told reporters that the MMC strike by workers should be resolved and added that he was willing to collect garbage from his ward using labour and vehicles at his own cost, besides taking it to the garbage treatment plant.
"This is a sad state of affairs and we are seeing garbage all over the roads almost everywhere in Vasco. I appeal to the government and DMA-appointed administrator to intervene and have talks with the striking workers to resolve the issue so that garbage is also cleared.”
“If I am permitted by the DMA and chief officer, I am willing to take the responsibility of clearing the garbage from my ward at my own cost and take it to the waste treatment plant site.”
“I appeal to other councillors to do the same so that people are not inconvenienced and this can be a temporary solution to tackle garbage till the strike is called off," said Raut.
Outgoing councillor Murari Bandekar has assured to clear the garbage from cages daily till the strike is called off.
"I have already started collecting the garbage overflowing from cages in Baina area since Wednesday evening, as the Ram Mandir Rath was also moving along the road here.”
“I assure to clear garbage daily till the strike continues. Though I know that the MMC is an autonomous body and has to be self-sustained, I appeal to the government to try and clear salaries so that the issue is resolved," said Bandekar.
